ERHS PARENT AND STUDENT COMMUNICATION

March 19, 2020 Update

A Note from the ERHS Admin Team:

Greetings Parents and Guardians!

We would like to extend a greeting to all of you from our entire staff. We are missing our students and the hustle and bustle that comes with a new trimester.  We have entered a time in which we will all need to make adjustments. Our ERHS staff is doing just that. We are working hard to prepare to meet the needs of your child(ren) in new and different ways should distance learning be enacted.   We continue to be optimistic that we will be a stronger ERHS community as we progress through the current pandemic.  Please review the information below in its entirety as it will provide pertinent information as we progress into the next two weeks.   Additionally, please remind  your child to begin checking his/her/their student Google Apps email account and Schoology Messenger on a daily basis. This will be the main communication line between students and teachers.

We wish you and your family well.

Sincerely,

Jim Smokrovich, ERHS Principal

Jason Gonnion, Assistant Principal

Sara Palodichuk, Assistant Principal, Activities

Ashley Ruka, Assistant Principal

Brian Boothe, Assistant Principal

Student Pick up of Personal Items:

Next week, students will be allowed to come and pick up personal items from their academic, PE or athletic locker from 9am-2pm on Monday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 24.

Students, if you come to the school to pick up your personal items, please practice social distancing when in the building. This means groups of five or less and maintaining a distance of approximately six feet between you and other people.

Student Pick up of Academic Materials for Trimester 3:

If/when an announcement is made that Distance Learning will begin on Monday, March 30th, our academic materials pick up for Trimester 3 will take place on Thursday, March 26 from 12:00-8:00 pm.  The details of who will need to pick up materials and specific times will be shared with families on Wednesday, March 25th by 2:00 pm.

Students should check all of their classes in Schoology on Wednesday, March 25th and their google apps email  to see if there are particular materials that need to be picked up on Thursday, March 26th.

916 Course Materials:  Please refer to communications directly from 916. We are working with them to get materials on site for you.  If you need to pick up physical materials for these classes, we will have them for you on Thursday, March 26.

Quarantined Students and Families: If you and/or your child are in a quarantined situation, we can make arrangements for delivery of your academic materials. Please send an email to Assistant Principal Brian Boothe at bboothe@sowashco.org

Chromebook Repairs:

If your student currently has a loaner Chromebook because his/her/their school issued Chromebook is being repaired, please watch for communication from our media center specialist, Lori McCrady. She will notify you when your device has been returned and when you might be able to come and pick it up. We have received a number of Chromebooks this week and anticipate receiving more next week that we will be prepared to pass out to you on Thursday, March 26 during the materials pick up.

Should distance learning be enacted, we will have a plan to handle ongoing Chromebook repair needs. We will communicate that process out to you at a later time.

Planning for Distance Learning:

  • Distance Learning is intended to help students continue their education in the event that longer-term school cancellations are needed due to COVID-19. Distance Learning will ensure students continue to receive engaging learning activities with daily interaction with their teacher(s).
  • The state of Minnesota has directed school districts to use these two weeks (March 16-27) to plan. Distance Learning will not begin until March 30, if a longer-term school cancellation is necessary.
  • Along with planning for Distance Learning, teachers will be reaching out to families through Friday, March 20 to ask about access to devices, internet, meals and additional services. Our goal is for each middle and high school student to have access to a device and internet during Distance Learning. Families who do not have access to a device and/or internet are encouraged to access the District resources.
  • In the meantime, please become familiar with our distance learning plans below.  More information is available here.
  • Should we begin Distance Learning for East Ridge students, it will be self-directed, independent learning. Students will be given assignments for each course through Schoology.
    • Teachers will post lesson plans daily, by 10 a.m. Monday-Friday.
    • Teachers will be available via Schoology, email or phone between the hours of 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m.
    • Distance Learning activities will vary in the length of time required to complete the assignment. Each class assignment will take approximately 50-60 percent of the time students traditionally spend in class during a regular school day. Teachers will document attendance as students complete assignments and interact with content.

Practice Distance Learning Day:

On Tuesday, March 24 East Ridge teachers will participate in Distance Learning practice and will post practice activities for students in Schoology. This practice will allow staff and students to learn more about the technology, ask questions and be prepared for the potential of mandatory Distance Learning, as declared by Governor Walz after March 27.

We encourage all ERHS students to participate in this practice opportunity.

  • South Washington County Schools will be providing grab and go meals to anyone under the age of 18 or those enrolled in our Next Step program. To register for meals, please complete the questionnaire.
  • The registration includes:
