Welcome to the 2020-21 School Year!

Home of the Raptors

Dear Students and Families,

At East Ridge High School, staff have been working to prepare the school for the return of students and staff.  In this communication to our families, there will be several topics covered and explained.  Please set aside some time to read this message in its entirety and share it with your student.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS INFORMATION WAS UPDATED ON AUGUST 20TH TO FIX AN ERROR REGARDING THE CALENDAR

Back to School Information:

ERHS Health and Safety Procedures

General Procedures and Information:

  1. Students and staff, while attending A & B days, are required to wear masks and follow strict social distancing guidelines, per the Governor’s order and School Board Policy.
  2. Students will be issued a locker, however, are encouraged not to use it unless it is necessary to avoid congregating and adhere to social distancing guidelines.  Having a durable backpack will be important to carry their Chromebook, school supplies and personal items.  Locker assignments can be found in Student/Parent Portal when schedules are published.
  3. All of our instructional spaces have been arranged and set up to meet the 6 feet of spacing required by the MDH guidelines.
  4. We’ve adjusted our walking patterns and dismissal times to minimize person-to-person contact. All of our stairwells will be one direction only - up or down - throughout the building with the exception of the main hallways on the first and second floor, the pod areas will be one-way traffic only. We’ve placed directional arrows on the floor and many signs throughout the building to make it easy for students.

Morning Arrival:

  1. On school days, the doors to the building will open for students at 8:10 a.m.
  2. Upon arrival at school, students will report directly to their first period classroom and go to their assigned seat.
  3. Students who need to get breakfast may do so when they arrive by reporting to the cafeteria.  There will be individual seating, and when finished, students will then report to their first period by 8:35 a.m.
  4. Students will not be permitted to congregate in large groups and staff will remind students to continue moving to their class.

Classroom Procedures:

  1. Students will have 10 minutes between classes.
  2. Teachers will keep students out of classrooms during passing time as desks are wiped down and prepared for the next class of students.
  3. Students will be encouraged to keep walking in the hallway while practicing social distancing until their teacher is ready to receive students and open the classroom.
  4. Teachers will outline the health and safety procedures for their classroom’s unique layout and class needs  (i.e. science labs, art labs, technology and computer labs, etc.)

Cafeteria Procedures:

  1. Student lunch periods will include individualized seating in the cafeteria. Seating provided is arranged to meet the MDH guidelines for social distancing. Seating cannot be rearranged or moved.
  2. Student lunches will have limited menu choices. Students will be served their menu choice in individually wrapped selection or it will be pre-plated. Disposable trays will be used.
  3. Students will eat and remain seated at their seat until dismissed to return to their classroom.  Student cafeteria seating will be cleaned after breakfast and between each lunch shift.

Dismissal Procedures:

  1. Students will be dismissed in a staggered pattern from their classrooms beginning at 1:32 p.m.
  2. All students and staff will continue to wear masks and maintain strict social distancing while students exit the building.
  3. Students who will be using district transportation will continue to wear their masks onto the bus and will be expected to follow the safety procedures communicated by our drivers.
  4. Students who are in an activity, and do not have transportation to leave and return, may choose to wait inside the building at a designated area where an individual seat is available and meets the social distance criteria.  In this case, a student will be required to continue to wear their mask.

2020-21 Student Schedules

A & B hybrid group assignments will be communicated this week via email from the district office.

Complete student class schedules are tentatively going to be released on Monday, Aug. 24. Please note that this date is subject to change. Schedule requests are going to be honored on a very limited basis due to the complexities of the master schedule this fall. More information about how to request changes will be communicated at a later time.

Schedule Change Requests: Please use this form (Schedule Request Form Term 1.1 and 1.2) to request any changes to your reschedule for Term 1.1 and 1.2. Due to the complexities of this year’s master schedule, schedule change requests will be honored on a very limited basis. We will explore the potential for schedule changes for the following reasons only:

  1. You have an “empty” period on your schedule.
  2. You already had the class.
  3. You did not take or did not pass the prerequisite course.
  4. You were scheduled into a course that is at an inappropriate academic level for you. (There may be paperwork involved beyond this form for this scenario.)

Due to high volumes, you will be notified by your counselor of the change in schedule should your request be honored. Please check your schedule prior to the days leading up to your start date in the Student/Parent Portal after the schedules are published.. If you do not see the change, it means that the request could not be honored.

Senior Study

Seniors in good standing academically, behaviorally, and on track for graduation may elect to have a Senior Study scheduled with permission. This is an earned senior privilege and administration retains the right to revoke this privilege at any time. Schedule adjustments to accommodate this request will be limited. Due to the change in our schedule structure, students can have Senior Study scheduled in any hour of their school day but for only one period per trimester.

Senior Study Participation Criteria:

  1. Complete the Senior Study Request Form by Thursday, August 20.
  2. You must be satisfactorily progressing toward graduation.
  3. All credits and state mandated tests for graduation need to be completed to date.
  4. Senior students are responsible for communicating any changes to their schedule with post-secondary institutions.
  5. Participating seniors must be off campus during their scheduled Senior Study.

Please complete this form to express your interest in a Senior Study FOR TRIMESTER ONE. Should you meet all the criteria and have an opening or an elective course that can be dropped, a Senior Study will be scheduled.

Transition Week for Students (August 31st September 3rd)

9th grade students and 10th-12th grade students who are NEW to East Ridge are invited to ERHS on their assigned day (A or B) for orientation. Please arrive by 8:30 am and report to your FIRST PERIOD classroom. Student Ambassadors will be available to help guide students to the correct location. Please print a copy of your student’s class schedule to help them through the day.

During Orientation, students will get a chance to work through their class schedule, checkout textbooks, checkout a chromebook, and get a tour of the school. We will also work through the health and safety protocols for the year. Lunch will be available for purchase and students will be dismissed at 1:35 pm.

Please note that transportation is NOT provided, so parents are asked to provide transportation for their student to and from orientation.

9th grade students enrolled in the Virtual Learn Academy (VLA) are asked to participate in this event in a special way.  Please see the information in the Virtual Learning Academy Students Section.

On September 2nd & 3rd, all students in 9-12 will practice their hybrid schedule on the day in which they are assigned to attend school in-person. Families will drop off and pick up their child on these days. School meals will be available for students to purchase at regular prices or at no cost for students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Orientation will begin at 8:30 am and will end at 1:35 pm.

School Supply List - All Students

ERHS does not maintain a list of supplies for students. Since each student has their own unique schedule when they get to the high school it is difficult to create one master supply list that would work for everyone.

We ask that each student have:

  • Notebooks or binders with loose leaf paper/dividers
  • Pens and Papers
  •  EAR BUDS/HEADPHONES on the first day of school (this is important to ensure students can participate in online discussions)
  • Some teachers may have their supply lists posted on Schoology.

ERHS is an AVID school and our hope is that all 9th grade students come to school prepared with an AVID binder. The list below includes all materials needed to properly build your binder and additional items that may help you to be successfully organized.  GRADE 9 SUPPLY LIST.

An important note is to ensure you have completed the Chromebook Protection Plan and Agreement process outlined below PRIOR to attending Transition Week.

Virtual Learning Academy Students

PICKING UP MATERIALS:

Students enrolled in our Virtual Learning Academy are asked to come pick up their school materials (textbooks and other supplies) on Friday, August 28th from 10:00 am-1:00 pm.  We will do a drive through process at the main office drive thru area.  We will send a map to families of VLA students to show the specific route prior to this event..

  • Please be sure to complete the chromebook protection plan and agreement process outlined below prior to picking up your materials.

PARTICIPATING IN TRANSITION WEEK:

Our ERHS students who are a part of VLA are encouraged to participate virtually in our transition week events.  9th grade VLA students and families will be sent some specific information regarding their participation the week before.  This will include an opportunity to get their photo taken at school (for 9th graders - see below) and to join their advisory classes for some introductory activities.  More information will be shared with VLA families as details are finalized. VLA students will also follow their daily schedule on September 2nd and 3rd as teachers will post activities by 8:30 am.

SCHOOL PHOTOS:

9th grade VLA students who wish to have their school photo taken are invited to ERHS on August 31st or September 1st from 2:00-3:00 pm.  Report to the activities entrance if you wish to have your photo taken and you’ll be directed to the gym for your school photo. 10th-12th grade VLA students who wish to have their school photo taken will do so on September 15th or 16th. Look for more information to come.

Chromebook Protection Plan and Agreement

All high school students at ERHS are assigned a Chromebook by the district. Before receiving a device, each student will need to purchase or decline coverage offered by the district’s Device Protection Plan on SmartSchoolK12. The plan provides coverage for accidental damage to the device; damage from fire, flood, natural disasters, or power surges; and theft (with filed police report).

The participation cost for those choosing to enroll in the Device Protection Plan is $20 annually per device. Families who qualify for federal educational benefits, such as free and reduced meals, will also be eligible for reduced pricing ($15 annually per device) on the plan or free coverage by the plan. Learn more about the Device Protection Plan here.

Chromebooks will be distributed during the first week of school to all of our incoming 9th grade students and to any newly enrolled students in grades 10-12.
