ERHS PARENT AND STUDENT COMMUNICATION

April 3, 2020 Update

A Note from the ERHS Admin Team:

Greetings Parents/Guardians and Families,

Week one of Distance Learning is coming to a close. What a week it has been!  The technology has caused a few moments of frustration, but the shared pride we have in our teachers, staff members, students, and families is outshining those struggles.  We cannot thank our staff members enough for the amount of work they have done to try and provide some semblance of normalcy in these uncertain times.

As a high school staff, we are all thinking about the needs of our students, and we miss the busy hallways, noisy lunchroom, and the events/activities that should be going on right now.  We are thinking particularly of our senior class of 2020.  Please know that we are doing everything in our power to find alternative ways to celebrate and acknowledge their accomplishments.

Please note that while the building is closed, administrators and some clerical staff are still working in the office daily and are available if needed.  Teachers are available during office hours from 10 am-12 pm & 1-3 pm each school day.

Our school motto is #OneEastRidge.  Never has that meant more than today!  The pandemic is impacting all of us - our families, our small business owners, educators, health care workers, frontline professionals, and first responders.  To watch our community rally together to support each other is truly inspiring.

Continue to take good care of yourself and your families. Stay healthy and stay safe.

Sincerely,

Jim Smokrovich, ERHS Principal

Jason Gonnion, Assistant Principal

Sara Palodichuk, Assistant Principal, Activities

Ashley Ruka, Assistant Principal

Brian Boothe, Assistant Principal

New Information:

Attendance: In the event a student is ill and unable to participate in Distance Learning, please continue to use the Attendance Line to report that. We will get the information into our system so teachers are aware. (651) 425-2300.

***It is important that students check Schoology every day, for every class.  Many teachers are using small check-ins or quick write assignments to take attendance.  It is critical that students follow these practices to ensure they are being marked present each day.

Schoology Updates: As we continue through Distance Learning it is a great reminder that parents/guardians should take full advantage of the tools in Schoology.  Please take a few minutes to ensure you have your Schoology Parent account activated and connected to your student.  This website has all of the information a parent/guardian would need to set up their Schoology account.

Schoology also has a status website that will indicate when it is not functioning properly.  It might be good to bookmark this website and check if your student is struggling to access Schoology.

If you have questions about Schoology or need help, please reach out to schoologyhelp@sowashco.org

Grading During Distance Learning: As we transition to Distance Learning, we wanted to share with families that grading in an entirely online classroom will look a little different than traditional grading.  Teachers will be working together to create grading practices for each class.  It is important for parents/guardians and students to check and understand the grading practices being used in each of their classes.

ACT Testing Update: As communicated to all of our Juniors earlier this week, the April 7th ACT test has been cancelled.  We are working with district administrators and ACT to find an alternative to provide this opportunity for the Class of 2021.  More information will be shared when an alternative date is finalized.

This means that April 7th is now a Distance Learning day for all 9-12 students.  So all students will still check Schoology for their assignments like a regular Distance Learning day.

Prom Update: Our April 25th prom at the Historic John P. Ferber Farm has been cancelled.  At this time, we are finalizing logistics to have the Grand March and Dance on May 16th at ERHS.  We will work with the student leadership involved in Prom to plan for a great event.  More information and specific times will be shared as we finalize details.

Graduation Update: We are continuing to discuss options for graduation moving forward.  Graduation is still scheduled for June 7th at this time.  It is absolutely a priority for us to celebrate the Class of 2020.  As we know more we will share directly with our students, families, and staff.  We will still share information about graduation requirements on April 13th and 29th for our senior meetings.

Ticket requests for the ceremony and graduation fees are now scheduled to open on May 1st.  To see the current timeline, please visit our graduation/seniors website here.

Counseling Corner:

Attention Seniors! There are several scholarships still available in Naviance under Scholarship List.  Some deadlines have been extended.  Please be aware if the instructions state to turn an application to the counseling office that we instead would prefer that it be scanned and emailed to Mrs. Peters, mpeters1@sowashco.org .  Also, you are still able to apply to colleges and request transcripts during this time of distance learning.  Your counselors are thinking of you and are here for you. The best way to get a hold of your counselors is via email, but feel free to reach out via phone as well.

Take care,

Your ERHS Counselors
