AP Testing

Advanced Placement tests are cumulative post-course assessments that can yield free college credits. Students sign up for testing in the fall and the tests are administered in May. For the best price, students should order and pay for their AP tests by October 25. Hybrid and Virtual Advanced Placement (AP) students should plan to take the AP exams this spring.
The 2021 AP Exams will be administered over two weeks in May:
  • May 3–7 and
  • May 10–14
2021 ERHS AP Exam Schedule

Should social distancing still be necessary, schools will have additional options to ensure all students can be tested across multiple dates in May.

From the AP Website:

The AP Program is prepared to meet schools and students where they are this year. AP will support in-school testing in 2021 because administering exams in schools maximizes access and opportunity, and we’ll provide a contingency testing option—that contains full course content—if school buildings close for safety concerns.

Students should be getting emails from the College Board and our AP Coordinator for up to date information about AP testing. Here is a quick summary of some of the key pieces of information from the emails so far:

Testing Dates
AP exam dates have been changed since online testing was announced. Any previously published dates (for paper-pencil testing) should be disregarded.

Two days before each exam, AP students will receive an email from the College Board with a personalized e-ticket that will include an eight-character AP exam login ID code. This e-ticket is unique to you and not transferrable. If an AP student doesn’t receive the email, they'll still be able to access their e-ticket (two days before testing) directly throughMy AP

Getting Ready to Test
Complete this checklistfor each AP Exam you're taking this year. All subjects require you to have your e-ticket, AP ID, a device with a browser and internet or cellular connectivity, and assistive technology (if applicable) on hand the day of the exam. As some of these steps take time, be sure to do this well before exam day.

The AP Exam will only open in the latest versions of Chrome (recommended), Firefox, Safari, or Edge. It willnotwork in Internet Explorer.Google Chromeis free and available for download for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Beginning the week of May 11, you can also download and practice on the AP World Languages Exam App (WLEA).

Exam Content Review
Check theAP Exam Schedule for course-specific exam requirements and review this list of what you need on exam day for each AP subject

If you are not taking an AP course with one of our East Ridge Teachers, you can still use the College Board resources to review content for your exam. Use the independent studyjoin codes below to join a class at  https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/.

Students can attend free online AP classes and review sessions for prep week. During the final days before exams, online AP classes will focus on understanding the exam day experience and reviewing sample exam questions. To access the live AP classes and recordings, visit the AP YouTube channel. The AP YouTube channel is not put out by our ERHS teachers.

AP Secure Browser
A secure browser was developed by AP to reduce plagiarism or cheating possibilities and protect the integrity of the test items. Initially, we were told this secure browser would be needed for the official AP exams. Plans have changed. Now the secure browser will not be needed for the official credit-bearing AP exams.
The College Board has a secure app/browser that has been downloaded and pushed out  (installed remotely) by the district to all our student Chromebooks. Students are not allowed to download apps per district policy.
Students, you can find the secure app/browser by looking for the icon on the apps selection screen as you log into your school-issued Chromebook. From there, you'll likely need to enter College Board credentials (username and password) to use the browser for classwork. If you cannot find the College Board app on the apps screen, we can have our tech folks re-install it on your machine from afar. Email esalmon1@sowashco.org if you need help.

Exam Demonstration

On May 4, you can practice submitting responses with theAP 2020 Exam Demo. It will allow you to practice the different ways to submit your responses. If you can't connect to this demo from your planned testing device, you won't be able to access the real exam on test day.

The demo will be generic across subjects, and not a practice exam. A video walk-through of the world language experience will also be available.  All students should practice the process of test taking prior to the exam.  AP Testing Guide

World Language Exams
This year’s AP Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish Language and Culture Exams will be taken using a dedicated app (the AP World Languages Exam App) running on a smartphone or tablet. The timed exam content is 15−22 minutes long—shorter than other subject exams—and only have speaking tasks. There are no written responses and no reading tasks for these exams. The World Language exams have a different construct and administration format than other AP Exams this year; some special testing accommodations may be provided differently.

Beginning the week of May 11, you can download and practice on the AP World Languages Exam App (WLEA). Use the app in practice mode to become familiar with its features, test your technology's compatibility, and check the quality of sound in your intended exam location. For details about how the app will work, visit theAP World Language and Culture ExamspageAP Testing Guide

Special Testing Accommodations
If you have been approved for special testing accommodations/support, your online testing experience will still include the approved accommodations. A common accommodation is 150% time. The timer on your test will automatically be set for 150% time on your computer.

To check the details of a student's approved accommodation, parents or students can sign in to theBigFuture siteusing the username and password for the student's College Board account. For more

For the quickest refund, please login to yourTotal Registration account and cancel your exam. The AP Coordinator will issue a refund to your credit card through Total Registration.
Late Exams
This year only, students can choose to take the regularly scheduled AP exam(s) or take the late testing exam(s). If you don't use your e-ticket for the regularly scheduled exam, a new e-ticket will automatically be issued to you via yourCollege Board account for late testing. No specific arrangements are needed to take a late test instead of a regular test this year. No additional fees will be applied. However, if you are ill or have computer problems during late testing, additional make up tests are not offered.

CLEP Testing Option
If you didn't sign up for the AP exam but want to earn credit via examination for the class, CLEP presents an additional opportunity for students to earn college credit if you plan to study in the U.S. CLEP testing is available through official CLEP test centers, located primarily on U.S. college campuses. Passing a CLEP test is often accepted for college credits like AP exams. For more information, visit theCLEP website.

ERHS AP Students and Parents:

It has been quite a whirlwind as school has changed for all of us in the last few weeks. No doubt, you may have questions about what the distance learning might mean for Advanced Placement exams. We received an update from the College Board (AP's parent organization) on Friday.

Critical points from the College Board include:

  • Traditional face-to-face AP exam administrations will not take place this year. Students will take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. (In AP, "Free Response" normally means short essay.)
  • Some students may want to take the exam sooner rather than later, while the content is still fresh. Other students may want more time to practice. For each AP subject, there will be 2 different testing dates.
  • The exams will only include about 3/4 of the year's content for each exam. See the chart at the bottom of the complete message for specifics on each content area.
  • Students will still be able to earn college credit by passing an AP Exam. Colleges are on board with this shorted exam format due to the national emergency.
  • Students will be able to take these streamlined exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.
  • AP Art students will submit a truncated digital portfolio with fewer pieces of work. Classic paper portfolios will not be mailed to AP this year for scoring.
  • Keep working on your AP class with your instructor each day. We are still working to support our ERHS AP students from a distance while you study at home. It is not time to give up on your AP class.

More updates are coming April 3rd

The full exam schedule, specific free-response question types that will be on each AP Exam, and additional testing details will be available from the College Board by April 3. They'll also unlock any relevant free-response questions in AP Classroom for digital use so students can access all practice questions of the type that will appear on the exam.

Exam cancelations

While we encourage students to wait until closer to the test date to decide, any student already registered for an exam can choose to cancel at no charge.ERHS comment: please wait to make any cancellation choices until we hear more from the College Board about how this might work. We expect to hear more by April 3.

Testing accommodations

If I have been approved for a test accommodation, (like extra time on test day) will that still be available for me to use?ERHS response: To the best of our knowledge, yes. We expect to hear more from AP on that shortly.
