Updated June 3, 2020

Hello Class of 2020!  Below are a few important messages about how we are going to end our year together.  Please read each item carefully as there is a lot of information.

As you have heard, our virtual graduation will take place on Friday, June 12th at 6:00 pm.  You will find the graduation on our
ERHS YouTube Channel.

How should I prepare for my virtual graduation?

  • Our recommendation is to wear your cap and gown and other regalia.  Make it a formal affair at home.  Ask your family to dress up too.  Your tassel should be on the RIGHT side of your cap.
  • Someone should hold onto your diploma until your name is read.  Then, they can hand your diploma to you after your name is read.  Be sure to capture the moment with a photo.
  • There will be a moment at the end of the ceremony where Mr. Smokrovich will ask you to move your tassels from RIGHT to LEFT.  Please wait to do this until Mr. Smokrovich tells you during the ceremony.
  • After the tassels have been moved, Mr. Smokrovich will present the Class of 2020.  At this moment you are free to throw your cap in the air.
  • We will end by playing the school fight song.  You can find the lyrics here if you are unfamiliar.
  • There will be a social media process so you can interact with us during graduation as well.  So have your social media accounts ready, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram.

Photo Opportunity on Friday June 12th

Seniors will be able to drive a procession route through campus and take a professional photo with their graduation regalia from 1:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12th prior to the virtual ceremony at 6:00pm.  Graduates should come wearing their graduation gowns, caps, tassels and stoles. The route will be similar to that which we used for our 2020 Senior Parade. A map can be found here.

Please arrive By Last Names:

  • A-Ge    1:00-2:00 pm
  • Gi-Lu   2:00-3:00 pm
  • Ma-Sa 3:00-4:00 pm
  • Sc-Z        4:00-5:00 pm

(Please do your best to adhere to the schedule above as we have a large graduating class and want to be sure to accommodate everyone.)

At the end of the route, graduates will be asked to step out of their vehicle and into the photo staging area.  Your name will be announced over the loudspeaker with Pomp and Circumstance playing in the background and your photo taken.  In each senior box there will be a Graduation Photo Card with your name and email address printed on it.  Bring your photo card along with your diploma in the diploma jacket for the photo.  The digital image will be provided to you free of charge as a keepsake.  Images will be sent to your student SoWashCo Google Apps email.  Please be sure to retrieve your photo prior to July 1, 2020, when all senior accounts are deactivated.

All graduates and any family members that join them must remain in their vehicle, with the exception of the graduate during the photo opportunity.  This will be a joyful tribute to the East Ridge High School class of 2020!

*This Graduation Celebration will replace the June 13th photo opportunity mentioned in a previous communication.

Photo Submissions Needed for Virtual Graduation

We would like to honor the traditional graduation ceremony rituals that includes a procession of graduates and the throwing of graduation caps. To do this, we would like to include photos and videos of students wearing their caps & gowns and throwing their caps into the air.  Once you get your cap & gown on June 4th, please upload pictures or short videos of you walking for the start of the ceremony or throwing your cap in the air for the end of the ceremony.  Please upload these pictures or videos by June 8th at 12:00 pm.

Conduct at Commencement

Commencement is considered the most formal and public of our educational ceremonies. Our seniors are celebrating the successful completion of 13 years of education. Friends and relatives are invited to honor and celebrate this achievement. We ask all who attend commencement to abide by the following guidelines:

  • The Commencement ceremony will be conducted with appropriate dignity and decorum. Do not bring air horns, whistles or any loud noise makers to the ceremony. Balloons are also not allowed. The use of these items distracts from the dignity of the ceremony.
  • We discourage large purses or bags in order to ensure comfortable seating for all in the Perch Gym bleachers. Bottled water is allowed in the Perch. Please remain from all other food or drink at the ceremony.
  • Children are to remain seated with an adult (not on laps) and are not allowed to walk the track at any time.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the overflow seating area in the Loft Stage.
  • ERHS is a tobacco-free campus. Students and spectators are not permitted to smoke on the premises.

Students/Graduates: All seniors who are eligible to take part in the commencement ceremony are encouraged to participate. It should be noted that participation in the commencement ceremony is not mandatory nor a condition for the completion of graduation requirements. On graduation day, seniors should report to Door 14 next to the student parking lot beginning at 3:00pm to check-in. Seniors are to arrive in ceremony attire, and in cap and gown. All students will be asked to open their gown to check for appropriate attire and appearance before the lineup and processional begins. Commencement is a formal activity and serves as the school district's public acknowledgement of high school completion. The cap and gown are formal educational attire and are not to be altered for the ceremony. In addition, it is encouraged that all seniors participating in the commencement activity dress appropriately, with recommended attire to be worn as follows:

  • Males: Collared shirt, dress slacks, dress socks, dress shoes (no recreational shoes such as sneakers, flip-flops, etc.) NO SHORTS OR SUNGLASSES.
  • Females: Dress skirt, dress slacks or dresses, dress shoes, (no recreational shoes; flats recommended over high-heels). NO SHORTS OR SUNGLASSES.

  • Seniors should not bring purses, cameras, bags, etc., to the ceremony. We will have a secure place to store car keys and cell phones. Beverages, beach balls, signs, or any other items that may distract from the formal ceremony are not allowed.
  • Chemical Use - Students who arrive with any indication that they have used alcohol or drugs will not be permitted to participate. The student will be detailed by ERHS administration and Woodbury Police.
  • Smoking - ERHS is a tobacco-free campus. Students and spectators are not permitted to smoke on the premises.
  • Disruptive Behavior - Disruptive behavior is defined as including but not limited to, loud and abusive verbal language or the unwillingness to respond directly or appropriately to administrative directions. These actions will be considered evidence of unruly behavior. Such conduct will be the basis for removal from the ceremony.

Graduation Photos

** Graduation photos for the Class of 2020 will occur on June 12th by way of a procession through campus with an outdoor professional photo opportunity. Photos will be sent to each student's SoWashCo Google Apps email within a reasonable time following the event. Students will need to retrieve their photo prior to July 1 when senior accounts are deactivated.

Commencement attendees are asked to REMAIN SEATED during the ceremony. Parents and families may take photographs from your seat while sitting, and before or after the ceremony. We have contracted with Lifetouch to take professional photographs of each graduate during the commencement ceremony.

All graduates are photographed as they cross the stage at commencement. Photos are normally available for viewing within 7-10 days following the ceremony. Be sure to visit to sign up to receive notification when your proofs are online and ready to order.
