Dear East Ridge Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s):

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year and East Ridge High School. Our staff is diligently preparing for our upcoming school year and the implications that surround us all within the pandemic.

East Ridge High School, established in 2009 strives to uphold the ISD 833 Mission, “We are committed to igniting a passion for lifelong learning.” Upon East Ridge High School’s inception, it has been grounded with the vision, “All graduates will achieve college and career readiness supported by the four pillars: academic rigor, activities, relationships, and technology.” Our school community also holds strong to our core values: character, community, critical thinking, excellence, and lifelong learning. The district strategic plan, our East Ridge vision and core values will drive our continuous improvement model. As we venture into the 2020-2021 school year, our staff will continue to focus on creating relationships with our student body and uphold our expectation that all students feel welcome and safe.

This fall we will be entering our school year with no indication of what challenges we will need to overcome together.  Our biggest priority is serving your children, the students of East Ridge High School.  As always the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority and together we can create protocols that will foster the opportunity to learn and grow together as an East Ridge community.

The new school year will bring enthusiasm and anxiety for students and parents.  We are committed to working with you and your child’s needs to make this school year a success. Pertinent information to help with the transition into our school year will be provided to you as it becomes available to me and through district-wide communications.

Mr. Jim Smokrovich

New Information:

Student Schedules:

Student schedules are tentatively going to be released on Monday, Aug. 24. Please note that this date is subject to change. Schedule requests are going to be honored on a very limited basis due to the complexities of the master schedule this fall. More information about how to request changes will be communicated at a later time.

Senior Study:

Seniors in good standing academically, behaviorally, and on track for graduation may elect to have a Senior Study scheduled with permission. This is an earned senior privilege and administration retains the right to revoke this privilege at any time. Schedule adjustments to accommodate this request will be limited. Due to the change in our schedule structure, students can have Senior Study scheduled in any hour of their school day but for only one period per trimester.

Senior Study Participation Criteria:

  1. Complete the Senior Study Request Form by Tuesday, August 18.
  2. You must be satisfactorily progressing toward graduation.
  3. All credits and state mandated tests for graduation need to be completed to date.
  4. Senior students are responsible for communicating any changes to their schedule with post-secondary institutions.
  5. Participating seniors must be off campus during their scheduled Senior Study.

Please complete this form to express your interest in a Senior Study FOR TRIMESTER ONE. Should you meet all the criteria and have an opening or an elective course that can be dropped, a Senior Study will be scheduled.

First Days of School & “New Student Orientation”

We are busy planning orientation events for our new Raptor students. Depending on the model of learning selected by the School Board, we will communicate the plans to kick off the school year in the near future.

Return to Play MSHSL Update:

The Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors, at its meeting on Aug. 4, approved moving forward as scheduled with four Fall activities. Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer and Girls Swimming and Diving beginning on Aug. 17 with limitations. The Board of Directors also approved moving Football and Volleyball to a modified spring season.

In approving the changes, the Board of Directors used information and frameworks provided by the Return to Participation Task Force in an earlier meeting.  These frameworks were grounded in the following guiding principles:

  • Demonstrate health and safety to the greatest extent possible
  • Align with state organizations and agencies around return to learn models
  • Provide an opportunity for education-based participation in each sport and activity
  • Demonstrate equity and fairness
  • Acknowledge financial implications
  • Apply guidelines consistently

The decisions to provide seasons for Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer and Girls Swimming and Diving beginning on Aug. 17 and move competition in Football and Girls Volleyball to a spring season were made based on:

  • Governor Walz’s Executive Order 20-82 declaring that the return to learning would be a localized decision aligning with the current statistical situation and mitigation measures available in each district,
  • The Minnesota Department of Education’s specific plan for returning to learning for the 2020-2021 school year,
  • The Minnesota Department of Health’s Guidance for Youth Sports along with the National Federation of High Schools Return to Sports document,
  • The MSHSL Return to Participation Task Force multiple frameworks for returning to participation,
  • Review of and feedback from lead physicians from the MSHSL Sports Medicine Advisory Committee
