AVID Info Night

Wednesday, December 12, 2018 - 14:13

As registration for next year is nearing, you are invited to attend an informational meeting at East Ridge High School or Woodbury High School to find out about the AVID elective class offered grades 9-12 in each of the three high schools.

AVID is a college readiness system that has existed for over 30 years and therefore has a great deal of data and statistics that demonstrate its effectiveness.  AVID's mission is to prepare students for college readiness and success in a global society. In order to ensure your student’s success, the AVID support system will provide, within an elective class, a curriculum that focuses on strong writing skills, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading, and study strategies.

Who is the AVID Student?

  • AVID is a system for students who have a strong desire to go enroll in a four-year college or university.
  • Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle with a GPA of 2.0-3.5 and average standardized test scores in math and reading.
  • Students in this system take the AVID Elective class daily at the same time they are enrolled in rigorous courses.
  • Student are expected to enter mainstream activities in the school and form a relationship with a professional volunteer organization.
  • Students are expected to keep an organized binder and take notes in every class, every day of the week.
  • Tutors are in the AVID class twice per week to run Socratic style problem-solving groups.
